Littlest Pet Shop - where all your pet dreams can come true!

A history of Littlest Pet Shop

Littlest Pet Shop was a range of popular toys, originally made by Kenner from 1992 until 1996. The original line of plastic pets and accessories were magnetized so that you could carry out neat little tricks like walking a puppy by pulling him along with his magnetic bone or toy.

In 1992 Littlest Pet Shop first launched five different sets including; Ready To Go Pets, Pet Presents, Cozy Home Pets, Mommy and Babies, Li’l Paw Print Pets and Pet Shop Playset. Every year up until 1996 a new collection of pets and play items were available as follows:

1993
Ready To Go Pets, Pet Presents, Cozy Home Pets, Care Center Playset, Pet Shop Playset

1994
Chatter Pets, My Real Pets, Pal Around Pups, Kennel Playcase

1995
Pets on the move! Star Styles Pet Salon, Pup’n Kitty Clubs, Dressed’n Ready Pets

Littlest Pet Shop featured a range of different characters, all made out of pastel coloured plastic and each with their own distinct feature or move. As the Littlest Pet Shop became more popular, the features of the animals got more advanced. However, four years or so after the initial launch, demand for Littlest Pet Shop figures fell, causing distribution to cease.

Some of the more popular Littlest Pet Shop characters were:
Happy Puppy – A small Dalmatian dog that came neatly in a light blue pet carrier along with his dog dish and a brush. The brush was magnetized so that when you brushed his tummy his tail would wag enthusiastically.

Hurrying Hamsters – Two cheeky hamsters that came with their water bottle and a bag of paper bedding and a clear pink wheel. If you placed the hamster in the wheel and turned the handle the hamster would look like it was running enthusiastically.

Chameleon – A green reptile that would alter colour if it got hotter or colder. This came with a water bottle and a background accessory that looked like the desert.

Playful Kittens – One ginger and one grey and white kitten that came with their own food dish, scratching post and magnetized mouse to play with. The ginger kitten’s head would nod if it were teased with the mouse whilst the grey kitten’s arms would move up and down.

Puppy Trio – The popular Poodle, German Shepherd and Brown dogs and the most obvious choice for a first purchase. These came with a dog house and green grass base, food dish and magnetized bone and newspaper.

Toucan – A toucan bird with large green feet. He came bundled with a turquoise cage, perch and a food dish. If you touched Toucan’s head the wings would flap.

The packaging for Littlest Pet Shop could be spotted a mile away, thanks to its clear identity of a pink brick building with a blue canopy.

In 2005 the Littlest Pet Shop was re-designed and re-launched by Hasbro. Original Littlest Pet Shop characters were still included in the batch, but many more were added to the selection as well. However as these were completely re-designed by toy designer Gayle Middleton they sported a new look, complete with Manga-esque large eyes and more contemporary colouring.

Since 2005 Littlest Pet Shop has found a place in little girls’ hearts once more.

Littlest Pet Shop trivia Littlest Pet Shop was suitable for ages four and up.
The new Littlest Pet Shop now has a Virtual Interactive Pets franchise. This allows children to view and play with their interactive pets online. Each plastic animal comes with a secret code in the collar that can be typed into the official Littlest Pet Shop website at www.hasbro.com.

Littlest Pet Shop is now also a popular animated TV show.

I can't beleive these are so ancient, I'm sure I saw an advert on the telly the other day for these. My daughter keeps saying she wants one for her birthday but I can't see the attraction. I suppose her friends have got them so it's a classic case of the junior jones'.
